Wages, while rising at an annual rate of 3.4% in May, have failed to keep pace with the 3.8% inflation rate in April, leaving three-quarters of Americans feeling their wages are insufficient to cover rising costs. This financial strain is evident in the surge of credit card delinquencies, which have reached their highest level since 2011, indicating a growing number of consumers struggling to meet their financial obligations. The survey also highlights a decline in consumer optimism about the future, with fewer households expecting their finances to improve over the next year. This backdrop of economic uncertainty and rising costs has led to a 15% belief among Americans that they could lose their jobs within the next year, the highest since December 2025. Despite these challenges, consumer spending has remained robust, supported by a rebound in hiring over the last three months.
