In 2017, Maddie, then just eight years old, was driving an ATV on the family's property in Fluker, Louisiana, when the vehicle flipped over into a pond. She was trapped underwater for two minutes before being freed and airlifted to the Children's Hospital New Orleans. "It was really not a sight anybody wants to see," Jamie Lynn told People magazine. "At that point, she was not breathing. We thought that she had passed."
In the midst of this crisis, a priest was called to administer Maddie's last rites while she lay comatose. It was a moment that would become a turning point in the family's lives.
"He comes in, and she physically sits up in all her restraints and tubes," Jamie Lynn recalled. "I'm screaming for the doctors, like 'Come in here now!' Even the priest was like, 'I've never seen anything like what's happening.'"
What happened next was nothing short of a miracle. Maddie, against all odds, fought to survive. She woke up from her coma, and the family was given a second chance at life.
"We were given a miracle, and I don't take it for granted," Jamie Lynn said, her voice filled with gratitude. "I knew she was in there and felt all of us praying."
Maddie, now 18, doesn't remember the accident but believes it strengthened the family's faith. "I feel like our faith got a lot stronger," she said. "In the end, I think such a negative experience affected us positively."
The accident has had a profound impact on Maddie's life. She recently graduated from high school and is heading to the University of Southern Mississippi to study health sciences and play softball. Jamie Lynn credits this success and Maddie's overall well-being to God's intervention.
"I just was so happy to have her, but how in the world did God give her back?" Jamie Lynn wondered. "And then He gave her back in a way that she's succeeding, she's beautiful, she's kind, she's smart... I feel like I don't get to ask for anything else in life because I got the biggest blessing."
